I am still grading! I really am not a fan of timed writings but the kiddos need to do them and get used to writing clear and articulate essays on random topics that they could care less about. The problem is reading 100+ essays on "my mom/dad/brother/sister is my hero because..." I've got approximately 40 left and it's proving very difficult to get through them. It must be done today; as you can see I'm totally on it.
Many of the essays are fantastic and about someone other than a family member.
I like those. An enormous amount of them are entirely too personal and make me feel like I'm invading their privacy. Never ask a kid a personal question - they might answer it.
On another note, I had my first "encounter" with a student outside of school. I was walking through Target and I hear my name in a schoolroom tone (fellow teachers know what I'm talking about). I turn around and there's one of my students. It was awkward and weird since I live almost 30 miles from where I teach. Apparently he was visiting his dad who lives in my little town. Neither of us knew what to say after the initial hellos; we just wandered away from each other after that.
Enough stalling, back to work.
